LIT Program Information
Camp Wiyaka’s Leaders in Training (LIT) program offers young adults ages 13-15 an opportunity to build leadership skills, and be a positive influence the lives of others.
While still taking part in typical camper experiences (attending activities and participating in camp events), the LITs have unique opportunities and responsibilities separate from the rest of the camp. LIT’s will have the chance to host a campfire as a group, lead an all camp activity, and assist younger campers on registration day. Each year the LIT group has completed a service project on camp property. Projects in the past have included camp trail maintenance, creating awareness for environmental issues, and the building of a successful vegetable garden. The service project is designed and completed by the group and few limitations are set as for what can be accomplished. Extra advantages of the LIT program include extended free hours in the evening, and going for off-camp activities, which could include anything from an evening of pizza and miniature golf to an extended canoe trip. The exclusive teambuilding events and programs allow for the group to unite. Each LIT session is 2 weeks and the LIT participants are expected to remain at camp over the weekend in the middle of the session. During the weekends, LITs have an additional opportunity to be a team without the distractions of many other campers.
To enroll in the LIT program, campers must complete an LIT Application. The application process also includes an LIT reference form that must be completed and returned in order to be considered for a position in the program. Campers can have any adult in their lives complete the reference form for them. This could include a teacher, minister, family friend, past camp counselor, team coach, or any other adult willing to support a camper’s desire to be a mature leader in the community. Applications also include a statement from the campers of their desire to contribute to the group and the program. This program is for those who are truly interested in being the leaders at Camp Wiyaka, the campers that everyone else looks up to. There are only 10 spaces available for each session so be sure to apply soon. Acceptance into the LIT program is not guaranteed and if an accepted LIT is not showing the maturity and leadership considered necessary during the program, they may be required to leave the LIT program and spend the remainder of their time as a standard camper. Any applicants who do not attend the LIT program will be welcome at to join the general camp program. Regardless of what program you attend, we look forward to seeing you at Camp Wiyaka this summer!
